The rules of space

Too little and it induces anxiety, too much and it feels empty. It is discussed deeply, with each qualified person sharing strong opinions on it, while even the unqualified tell me how it makes them feel. And it isn’t as simple as just adding more or taking away, it needs craft and consideration. If I get it wrong, the impacts can be monumental yet go totally unseen.

Space is the dimension of height, depth and width within which all things exist and move. The importance of space is immeasurable. We so often attempt to squeeze so much into the smallest of spaces, yet if we used space as intended our outcomes could be beautiful.

Space provides us the proximity to clearly distinguish the difference between elements.

Space can be both the central element, elevated and clearly noticeable, yet it can also be understated and subtle giving emphasis to all that is adjacent to it.

Space invokes imagination, allowing it to roam free.

Space creates comfort to our experiences; intimidating yet sensitive to the words within it, encouraging exploration.

As a designer I cannot neglect the importance of space. Space is critical to design, yet it is one of the most contentious aspects of it. The power of space goes far beyond aesthetics. It reflects the rules of life and so deserves respect and craft. Space, like me, should be intentional.
